Biology Ch. 8

QuestionAnswer
Transformation Process of reproduction in which genetic material is added to or replaces portions of bacteria’s DNA.
DNA Nucleic acid that transmits genetic information from one generation to the next generation and codes for production of proteins.
Nucleotide Compound made of phosphate group, a nitrogenous base and a 5 carbon sugar forms the basic structural unit of DNA.
DNA Replication Process by which DNA is copied.
Chromatin Strand of Chromosomes that consist of DNA and proteins.
RNA Principle molecule that carries out the instructions coded in DNA.
Transcription Loss of water vapors though the stomata of a vascular plant.
Messenger RNA Form of RNA that carries genetic information from the DNA in the nucleus to the ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
Ribosomal RNA Form of RNA that is an important component of ribosomes.
Transfer RNA Form of RNA that carries an amino acid to the ribosomes during the assembly of a protein.
Genetic Code Language of the instructions in DNA and in RNA that code for the amino acid sequence of a polypeptide.
Codon Group of three nucleotides in mRNA that specifies an amino acid.
Translation Process by which the nucleotides in mRNA are decoded into a sequence of a process in polypeptide.
Anticodon nucleotides in transfer RNA that bind to a codon in mRNA
Prommoter Special region of DNA to which RNA polymerase binds at the beginning of the process of transcription.
Repressor Protein that blocks a genes transcription by binding to the operator.
Intron Inventing sequence that is removed from mRNA and thus not expressed.
Exon expressed sequence of mRNA; a region that remains in mRNA after the introns are removed.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
