Review Vocabulary

TermDefinition
allele specific version of a gene that gives instructions for making a protein molecule (gene version)
chromosome An "x shape" made of genes and DNA
DNA A molecule that genes and chromosomes are made of
feature a characteristic that all members of a species have (eyes color, hair color, etc)
gene Gives directions for making a protein molecule
gene version A specific gene for an individual(allele)
mutation A random change to a gene that sometimes creates a new trait
offspring a child
trait A specific feature of an individual organism (blue eyes, black hair, etc)
variation Any difference in traits between individual organisms (I have hazel eyes but you have blue eyes)
inherit to receive genes from a parent
organism any living thing (such as plants, animals, and bacteria)
population a group of the same type of organism living in the same area
predator An organism that hunts for food
prey An organism that is killed and eaten by another organism
sexual reproduction the process in which two parents pass on their genes to create offspring
