What is the name of a scientist who studies the web of life or the interactions of living organisms with one another and their environment? ecologist
What word do we use to describe the non-living parts of our environment? abiotic
What word do we use to describe the living parts of our environment? biotic
What are the 5 levels that the environment can be organized into? (from smallest to largest) organism population community ecosystem biosphere
There are 4 smaller levels of organization than the organism. What are they? Smallest: cell tissues organs organ systems
What is a species of the same organism living in a specific habitat or geographical area called? population
Zebras, giraffes, lions, antelope, leopards, elephants, grass, acacia trees, termites, rocks, and watering hole are all part of a Savannah called a(n) ...... ecosystem
A caterpillar, a deer, and a rabbit all want to drink from the same puddle, eat the same plant, and bask in the same spot of sunshine. Are they competing members of a population? No, because a each organism is a different species. They are members of a community.
What is the highest level of environmental organization? biosphere
What makes up a population? a group of organisms that are the same species
All things in an environment can be divided into two categories called... abiotic factors and biotic factors
Temperature, precipitation, soil, air, sunlight, and water are all examples of...? abiotic factors
Do ecosystems have borders? No, some ecosystems are partially contained, but most overlap into other ecosystems.
Can organisms migrate from one ecosystem to another? Yes, but most stay in a habitat that provides the best food, shelter, water and air that they require for survival.
How big is a biosphere? A biosphere includes the deepest portions of the oceans all the way up to the atmosphere where life exists.
How are populations and communities related? Several populations of species living and interacting in an area make up communities.
How do abiotic factors affect the environment? Example: When it rains, plants grow. As the plants grow, organisms have more food and shelter available. Example: When the temperature is very hot, organisms have to adapt= find shady tree, dig hole in the ground, spray mud on top of them...
Do biotic factors affect abiotic factors? Yes. Ex: grass roots hold sand dunes in place, free-swimming corral attach to rocks forming corral reefs (changing direction of water that must flow around the reef)
