Reproduction

Reproduction and Development

QuestionAnswer
What are the 2 types of reproduction? Asexual and sexual reproduction
What is asexual reproduction? involves one parent and results in one or more offspring that is genetically IDENTICAL to the parent.
What is sexual reproduction? involves 2 parents. Offspring has some genetic material from both parents.
What is a gamete? A sex cell such as an egg or sperm.
How are genes carried? The genes are carried on chromosomes in the sex cell.
What is the male sex cell called? Sperm
What is the female sex cell called? Egg
What is cloning? It is a way of making identical genetic copies of the original cell.
What is cellular division? The orderly separation of one cell into 2. The genetic information is duplicated exactly.
What is mitosis? The process when the cells genetic material divides creating 2 complete sets of the cell. A copy of the genetic material is distributed to each cell.
What is meiosis? The process when the cells genetic material divides with half of the genetic material.
What is fertilization? When the sperm and the egg unite
What form of cellular division produces the sex cells? Mitosis or meiosis Meiosis
During mitotic division, what is the total number of cell divisions? 1
During meiotic division, what is the total number of cell divisions? 2
Is there an exchange of genetic material between chromosomes during mitotic division? No a complete copy
Is there an exchange of genetic material between chromosomes during meiotic division? yes
What is the number of functioning cells produced from the original cell during mitotic division? 2
What is the number of functioning cells produced from the original cell during meiotic division? 4 sperm or 1 egg
What is the genetic makeup of the final cell production during mitotic division? Same as the original.
What is the genetic makeup of the final cell production during meiotic division? Each containing half of the genetic information of the original
What is the function of cells produced in multicellular organisms during mitotic division? Growth or replacement of body cells
What is the function of cells produced in multicellular organisms during meiotic division? Combine to form the zygote for reproduction.
What is a zygote? gametes that are united and form a cell that contains all of the genetic information needed by the offspring.
What is recombination? Genes from the parent cells combine when fertilization occurs

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
