| organelle | a tiny cell structure that carries out a specific function within the cell |
| cytoplasm | the liquid region of a cell between the membrane and nucleus |
| mitochondria | the "powerhouse" of the cell where food molecules are converted to energy |
| endoplasmic reticulum | the cell's passageways for protein and other materials to move from one part of the cell to another |
| ribosomes | "factories" where proteins are produced |
| Golgi apparatus | organelle where proteins and other materials are received, packaged, and distributed to other parts of the cell |
| chloroplasts | in plant cells they capture the sun's energy and produce food |
| vacuoles | storage areas of the cell |
| lysosomes | organelles that break down materials in a cell |
| cell membrane | A cell structure that controls what can enter and leave a cell |
| cell wall | A firm layer that surrounds and protects plant cells |
| nucleus | control center of the cell |
