Cell Structure Test

Review the names and functions of the organelles within a cell.

QuestionAnswer
cell specialization different types of cells do different types of things (blood cells, skin cells, nerve cells)
tissue a group of cells that work together to do a special job form a _____
organs groups of tissues that work together to do a special job form an _____
system a group of organs that work together make up a system
golgi complex/apparatus takes in, stores, sorts, and sends out materials in the cell; makes lysosomes; and creates complex sugars
vacuole stores water/fluid, food, and waste products
nucleus controls the digestion, movement, and reproduction of a cell
lysosome digests food, destroys bacteria, breaks down cells
cytoskeleton helps the cell to maintain its shape, helps in cell division, and helps the cell to be able to move
mitochondria produce energy by breaking down sugars and starches; gives the cell the energy it needs to move, divide, produce products and contract
ribosome take amino acids and turn them into proteins
cytoplasm everything that is inside the cell membrane, except the nucleus
cell wall provides support and protection for the plant cell; water, oxygen and carbon dioxide can pass through this structure
cell membrane controls what comes in and goes out of a cell, supports the cell, and protects the cell
cell theory all living things are made of cells
unicellular one-celled organism
multicellular an organism made of more than one cell
prokaryotic a cell that does not have a nucleus (blue-green algae and bacteria)
eukaryotic a cell that has a nucleus (plant and animal)
rough endoplasmic reticulum (rough ER) does the synthesis and packaging of proteins and helps them to move through the cell
smooth endoplasmic reticulum (smooth ER) makes lipids, helps the body to get rid of drugs & poisons, and breaks up carbohydrates
chloroplast photosynthesis (when carbon dioxide and water are joined together to make sugar and oxygen) happens inside this part of the cell
DNA is responsible for providing the cell with its unique characteristics

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
