Anatomical Directions, Regions, Positions, and Planes

ANTERIOR/VENTRAL Front or belly side
POSTERIOR/DORSAL Back side
SUPERIOR Closer to the top of the head and is used for the axial region only
INFERIOR Farther away from the top of the head and is used for the axial region only
MEDIAL Toward the midline of the body
LATERAL Away from the midline of the body
PROXIMAL Close to the connection to the body and is used for the appendicular region only
DISTAL Farther away from the connection to the body and is used for the appendicular region only
SUPERFICIAL Closer to the surface
DEEP Farther from the surface
RIGHT On the body's right side
