| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Compound | A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds |
| Mixture | A combination of two or more substances that are not chemically combined |
| Solution | A homogeneous mixture of two or more substances |
| Element | A pure substance made of only one kind of atom |
| Base | A substance that decreases the hydrogen ion concentration in a solution. |
| fatty acids | Chains of carbon atoms bonded to hydrogen atoms |
| Atom | Basic unit of matter |
| hydrogen bond | Attraction between a slightly positive hydrogen atom and a slightly negative atom. |
| Solvent | A liquid substance capable of dissolving other substances |
| Solute | A substance that is dissolved in a solution. |
| Lipid | Energy-rich organic compounds, such as fats, oils, and waxes, that are made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. |
| Monosaccharide | A single sugar molecule such as glucose or fructose, the simplest type of sugar. |
| Nucleus | Control center of the cell |
| Electron | A subatomic particle that has a negative charge |
| ionic bond | A chemical bond resulting from the attraction between oppositely charged ions. |
| Ion | A charged atom |
| covalent bond | A chemical bond that involves sharing a pair of electrons between atoms in a molecule |
| Molecule | A group of atoms bonded together |
| Cohesion | Attraction between molecules of the same substance |
| pH scale | measurement system used to indicate the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in solution; ranges from 0 to 14 |
| Acid | any compound that forms H+ ions in solution |
| Ashesion | Force of attraction between different kinds of molecules |
| Buffer | Compound that prevents sharp, sudden changes in pH |
| Suspension | A mixture in which particles can be seen and easily separated by settling or filtration |
| Monomer | A simple compound whose molecules can join together to form polymers |
| Carbohydrate | Compound made up of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms; major source of energy for the human body |
| Nucleotide | Monomer of nucleic acids made up of a 5-carbon sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base |
| Protein | A three dimensional polymer made of monomers of amino acids. |
| Polymer | A long molecule consisting of many similar or identical monomers linked together. |
| nucleic acids | DNA and RNA |
| amino acids | Building blocks of proteins |
