Cardiac Medications
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Digitalis | Slows heart rate and strengthens contractions of the heart muscle thereby raising BP; Vasoconstrictor, usually used with heart failure; increases the amount of calcium in the myocytes (precaution; foxglove plant) |
| Nitroglycerin | (Vasodilator) causes dilation of all veins and arteries without increasing heart rate or stroke volune |
| Beta Blockers | Reduces heart rate and strength of cardiac muscle contractions, thus reducing O2 demand of heart; lowers BP; vasodilator; used to treat rapid HR, HTN & some arrhthmias |
| What medications are Beta Blockers? | Metoprolol, Carvedilol, Propranolol, Labetalol, Bioprolol, Nadalol, Sotalol, Lopressor, Atenolol, Tropolol. IF IT ENDS IN "LOL" it's a pressor |
| Calcium Channel Blockers | ↓ HR &lowers BP; ↓the rate at which calcium diffuses into cardiac muscle cells & smooth muscle cells as well as dilating the coronary blood vessels to ↑ blood flow to the cardiac muscle (vasodilator) |
| What are Calcium Channel Blockers used for? | used to control the force of heart contractions and ↓ arrhythmia, tachycardia, and HTN |
| Calcium Channel Blockers medications | Norvasc, Procardia, and Cardizem |
| Ace inhibitors | Reduces heart rate by relaxing blood vessels (vasodilator) and blocking angiotensin-converting enzymes that narrow blood vessels causing a release of hormones that will raise BP; used to treat CHF and HTN; decreases workload on heart by lowering BP |
| Ace inhibitor medications | Ramipril, Enalapril, Captogpril, Quinapril, Fosinopril, Benazepril, Lisinopril. THEY WILL END IN PRIL |
| Antihyertensive meds *aka angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) | used to treat HTN; reduces blood pressure, thereby reducing the work required by the heart to pump blood. |
| Antihypertensive medications | Losartan, Valsartan, Olmesartan, Candesartan, Telmisartan, Irebesartan, Eprosartan. END IN SARTON |
| Asprin | aspirin functions as a weak anticoagulant by inhibiting clot formation; vasodilator USED with early onset of MI |
| Aldosterone Antagonists | Rids your body of extra salt and fluid Ex: spironolactone, eplerenone |
| Diuretics | decreases swelling and congestion by getting rid of extra salt and fluid Ex: Furosemide, Torsemide, Bumetanide, Chlorthalidone, Hydrochlorothiaszide, Metolazone, Triamterene |
