Genetics
The blueprint of Life is in our genes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Genotype | The genetic make up of an organism |
| Phenotype | The physical appearance of an organism |
| Homozygous | An organism that has two of the same alleles for a trait eg. TT or tt |
| Heterozygous | An organism that has two different alleles for a trait eg. Tt |
| Codominance | The alleles are neither dominant or recessive so a mix of both the traits are expressed. This is also called incomplete dominance. |
| Hybrid | An organism that results from breeding of two genetically different organism example a cross between a horse and a donkey producing a mule. |
| Genetics | The scientific study of heredity |
| Heredity | The passing of characteristics from parent to offspring |
| Traits | The characteristics that are passed from parents to offspring |
| Purebred | An offspring that has many generation of the same traits. |
| Genes | The factors that control the traits |
| Alleles | Different forms of the genes example tallness gene is either TT or Tt |
| Dominant allele | Allele whose trait always shows up. |
| Recessive allele | The allele that is hidden whenever a dominant allele is present |
| Punnet square | A square used in genetics used for calculating gene frequencies |
| Chromosome | The thread like structure in the cell that carries hereditary information |
| DNA | A molecule that stores genetic information |
