Organelles:

Components of the Eukaryotic cell: Organelles

QuestionAnswer
Define plasma (cell) membrane Thin two layered film that surounds the entire cell consisting of proteins and lipids Semi-permeable
Cell wall only in plant cells nonliving structure composed mostly of cellulose, lies outside of cell membrane and gives the cell strength. Has opening which allows water and other dissolved substances to pass through
cytoplasm Fluid like material contained within the cell membrane, contains cell oraganelles
nucleus controls most cell processes consists of chromosomes-grainy material within the nucleus contains the cell's DNA Nucleolus-smaller region within the nucleus where ribosomes are produced Nuclear Envelope- double layer membrane that surrounds the nucleus,
Mitochondria Power House of the cell, turns food into energy.
Ribosomes Help in making proteins either free floating or attached to endoplasmic reticulum
endoplasmic reticulum Internal membrane transport system a)rough ER- has ribosomes on its surface, helps produce and transport proteins b) smooth ER- does not have ribosomes, helps transport lipids
Golgi bodies "factory" which takes proteins made by the ER and processes, packages, and releases them to outside the cell
Chloroplast Only plant cells Uses energy from sunlight to make food molecules in a process known as photosynthesis. Contains a green pigment called clorophyl
Lysosome contains digestive enzymes, which rake part in the digestion of food
centrioles pair of cylinder shaped objects located near the nucleus in animal cells that help in cell division (reproduction)
Vacuole stores water and other stuff. Many plant cells have a single large central vacuole filled with liquid- the pressure helps the plants support heavy structures like leaves. Animal cells have smaller vacuoles

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
