Inflammation
General Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Inflammation | A nonspecific response to injury that involves the mirocirculation and its blood cells |
| Injury | An alteration in the environment that causes tissue damage |
| Necrosis | The pathologic death of one or more cells or a part of tissue or an organ that results from irreversible damage to cels |
| Biochemical mediators | Chemicals in the body that activate responses |
| Hyperemia | The increased blood flow in blood vessels and tissues so that WBC can travel to the injured tissues |
| Erythema | Redness |
| Edema | Excess level of fluid in the interstitial space |
| Exudate | Fluid that flows into injured tissues due to inflammation. Consists of serum that contains white blood cells, fibrin, and other protein molecules. |
| Chemotaxis | The movement of white blood cells, as directed by biochemical mediators, to an area of injury |
| Kinin System | Clotting mechanism. May be activated during inflammation |
| Fever | Body temperature higher thatn the usual level of 98.6 |
| Leukocytosis | increase in the number of white blood cells circulating in the blood during inflammatory response. |
| Lymphadenopathy | Lymph nodes enlarged during inflammatory process |
| Regeneration | Complete removal of all cells, by-products, and inflammatory exudate during inflammation. A return of microcirculation to its preinflammatory state. |
| Repair | Final defense mechanism of the body. Cells and associated tissue that have undergone necrosis are replace with live cells and new tissue components. |
| Healing by primary intention | Healing of an injury in which little loss of tissue takes place. Edges of injured tissue can be joined together(bandages or sutures). Less scar tissue. |
| Healing by secondary intention | Edges of injury cannot be joined together during healing. A large clot forms. Increased scarring. |
| Healing by Tertiary intention | Infected injury. Healing similar to secondary intention except that infection will need to clear before healing. usually results in more scarring. |
| Interleukins | Cytokines that regulate the inflammatory response. They increase vascular permeability and attract PMN's |
| Leukotrines | They have a chemotactic effect on migrating neutrophils, and as such help to bring the necessary cells to the tissue. Leukotrienes also have a powerful effect in bronchoconstriction and increase vascular permeability. |
