Biology 122: Ecology

Scientific study of the interactions between organisms and environment

TermDefinition
Population a group of individuals of the same species living in an area
Community a group of populations if different species in an area
Ecosystem the community of organisms in an area and the physical factors with which those organisms interact
Landscape is a mosaic of connected ecosystems
Biosphere is the global ecosystem - sum of all the planet's ecosystems and landscape
Climate Change a directional change to the global climate that lasts three decades or more
Dispersion the pattern of spacing among individuals within boundaries of the population
Ecology Niche the specific set of biotic and abiotic resources that an organism uses in its environment
Mutualism an interspecific interaction that benefits both species
Disturbance an event such as storm, fire, or human activity that changes a community, removing organisms from it and altering resource availability
