Veins

QuestionAnswer
How do vessels get blood? Vaso vasorum are blood vessels that feed blood vessels nutrients and oxygen
Circulation of arteries From IVC to Rt. Atrium to Rt. Ventricle to LUNGS to Lt. Atrium to Lt. Ventricle And out the AORTA
Function To allow blood to return to the heart. Carry deoxygenated blood and waste products.
Composition of veins Tunica adventitia Tunica media Tunica intima Valves
Valves Veins have valves. Valves stop the blood from back flowing. Smaller veins have more valves than larger veins.
Inferior Vena Cava Largest vein in the body. Lies longitudinally - slightly to the right of midline Drains the kidneys, ovaries, adrenal glands, lower limbs, and pelvis.
Size of the IVC The size of the IVC should NEVER be greater than 3.7 centimeters.
Drainage into the IVC Renal veins Gonadal veins Hepatic veins
Renal Veins Dump blood from kidneys into the IVC
Right Renal Vein Anterior to the right renal artery. Courses directly from the right kidney.
Left Renal Vein Left renal vein is anterior to the left renal artery. Courses between the aorta and the SMA.
Gonadal Veins Right empties into the IVC Left empties into the left renal vein
Hepatic Veins Drain blood from the liver. 3 hepatic veins left right middle
Right Hepatic Vein Divides the right lobe of the liver into anterior and posterior segments.
Left Hepatic Vein Divides the left lobe of the liver into medial and lateral segments.
Middle Hepatic Vein Divides the right and left lobes of the liver
Portal Vein Function Provides 50% to 60% of the blood to the liver. Drains the GI tract, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen
Portal vein made up of what The main portal vein is formed from the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) , the splenic vein, and the inferior mesenteric vein.
Portal vein division After entering the liver, the portal vein divides into: right portal branch (supplies the right lobe) left portal branch (supplies the left lobe)
Splenic Vein Receives blood from the inferior mesenteric vein and the spleen. Travels the posterior border of the pancreas body and tail. Then joins the superior mesenteric vein to form the main portal vein.
Caval Thrombus Can invade the IVC due to renal carcinoma from the right kidney (Clot in the IVC)
Varicose Veins Veins that are stretched especially at valves.
Phlebitis Inflammation of veins
Leiomyosarcoma Primary malignant tumor of the IVC
Calcifications IVC may contain calcifications. Rare
