Different type of definitions of a family Legal, Social/ Normative, Personal, Theoretical
Legal definition Exist for law purposes such as custody, often determine who is and isn't eligible for benefits
Social definition Society contributes to the understanding and view of a family. If it is different from the nuclear family/ extended family it is seen as deviant
Personal definition We construct our own meaning of what a family is and what makes up a family. Making intentional families.
Theoretical definition Involve broad concepts and propositions about how we should study families. Considers stages of families, types of families and issues within families
