QuestionAnswer
Diploid A cell with two of each kind of chromosome, said to contain a diploid, or 2n number of chromosomes.
Haploid A cell containing one of each kind of chromosome, said to contain a haploid, or n number of chromosomes
Homologous Chromosome The two chromosomes of each pair in a diploid cell.
Meiosis The type of cell division which produces gametes containing half the number of chromosomes as a body cell.
Sperm Male gamete
Egg Female gamete
Sexual Reproduction A pattern of reproduction involving the production and fusion of haploid sex cells.
Crossing Over When non-sister chromatids from homologous chromosomes break and exchange genetic material.
Genetic Recombination May occur as a result of crossing over or by independent segregation of homologous chromosomes and is a major source of variation.
Nondisjunction The failure of homologous chromosomes to separate properly during meiosis.
