Haploid | A cell containing one of each kind of chromosome, said to contain a haploid, or n number of chromosomes |
Homologous Chromosome | The two chromosomes of each pair in a diploid cell. |
Meiosis | The type of cell division which produces gametes containing half the number of chromosomes as a body cell. |
Sperm | Male gamete |
Egg | Female gamete |
Sexual Reproduction | A pattern of reproduction involving the production and fusion of haploid sex cells. |
Crossing Over | When non-sister chromatids from homologous chromosomes break and exchange genetic material. |
Genetic Recombination | May occur as a result of crossing over or by independent segregation of homologous chromosomes and is a major source of variation. |
Nondisjunction | The failure of homologous chromosomes to separate properly during meiosis. |
