population

TermDefinition
age structure Percentage of the population (or number of people of each sex) at each age level in a population.
age structure diagram graph of the numbers of males and females within different age groups of a population
carrying capacity Largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support
Demography Scientific study of human populations.
density-dependent limiting factor limiting factor that depends on population density
density-independent limiting factor limiting factor that affects all populations in similar ways, regardless of population size
Dependent Variable Variable that the scientist measures or observes aka responding variable
distribution patterns clumped, uniform, random
Emmigration movement of individuals out of a population
Examples of density-dependent limiting factor disease, competition, natural disaster
exponential growth Population growth that is unhindered because of the abundance of resources for an ever-increasing population.
growth rate Rate of increase or decrease of a population
herbivory interaction in which one animal (the herbivore) feeds on producers (such as plants)
Immigration Movement of individuals into a population
Independent Variable Variable that the scientist changes on purpose aka manipulated variable
limiting factor Any biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the existence, numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms.
logistic growth Growth pattern in which a population's growth rate slows or stops following a period of exponential growth due to limited resources
population density how population is spread out in an area
X-axis Axis where independent variable is graphed
Y-Axis Axis where dependent variable is graphed

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
