population
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| age structure | Percentage of the population (or number of people of each sex) at each age level in a population. |
| age structure diagram | graph of the numbers of males and females within different age groups of a population |
| carrying capacity | Largest number of individuals of a population that a environment can support |
| Demography | Scientific study of human populations. |
| density-dependent limiting factor | limiting factor that depends on population density |
| density-independent limiting factor | limiting factor that affects all populations in similar ways, regardless of population size |
| Dependent Variable | Variable that the scientist measures or observes aka responding variable |
| distribution patterns | clumped, uniform, random |
| Emmigration | movement of individuals out of a population |
| Examples of density-dependent limiting factor | disease, competition, natural disaster |
| exponential growth | Population growth that is unhindered because of the abundance of resources for an ever-increasing population. |
| growth rate | Rate of increase or decrease of a population |
| herbivory | interaction in which one animal (the herbivore) feeds on producers (such as plants) |
| Immigration | Movement of individuals into a population |
| Independent Variable | Variable that the scientist changes on purpose aka manipulated variable |
| limiting factor | Any biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the existence, numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms. |
| logistic growth | Growth pattern in which a population's growth rate slows or stops following a period of exponential growth due to limited resources |
| population density | how population is spread out in an area |
| X-axis | Axis where independent variable is graphed |
| Y-Axis | Axis where dependent variable is graphed |
