TermDefinition
Kinetic energy The energy of motion
Heat energy The energy of random motion, often wasted energy.
Potential energy Stored energy due to structure or location
Chemical energy A type of potential energy found in the bonds between atoms.
Enzyme A protein that catalyzes a specific reaction
Activation energy The energy necessary to get a reaction started.
How do enzymes work? By lowering the activation energy.
Specificity A property of enzymes. Each enzyme can only catalyze one reaction. Another way of saying this, an enzyme can only work with a single substrate.
Environmental factors that influence enzymes Temperature and pH
What does it mean to say enzymes are regulated? Enzymes can be activated or inhibited (blocked from working) by other molecules.
