Soccer | A game played by two teams of 11 players, using a round ball which players kick up and down the playing field. Teams try to kick the ball into the other team’s goal. |
Cycling | The sport or activity of riding a bicycle |
Weightlifting | The sport or activity of lifting heavy weights |
Wrestling | A sport in which two people fight by holding each other and trying to throw or force the other one to the ground |
Diving | The sport or activity of diving into water with your head and arms first |
Basketball | A game played by two teams of five players, using a large ball which players try to throw into a high net hanging from a ring |
Baseball | A game played especially in the US by two teams of nine players, using a bat (1) and ball. Each player tries to hit the ball and then run around four bases before the other team can return the ball. |
American football | A game played by two teams of 11 players, using an oval ball which players kick, throw, or carry. Teams try to put the ball over the other team’s line. |
Hockey | A game played on a field by two teams of 11 players, with curved sticks and a small hard ball. Teams try to hit the ball into the other team’s goal. |
Bowling | A game in which players roll heavy balls (called bowls ) along a special track towards a group of pins (= bottle-shaped objects) and try to knock over as many of them as possible |

Pool | A small area of still water, especially one that has formed naturally |
Chess | A game for two people played on a board marked with black and white squares on which each playing piece (representing a king, queen, castle, etc.) |
Cricket | A game played on grass by two teams of 11 players. Players score points (called runs ) by hitting the ball with a wooden bat and running between two sets of vertical wooden sticks, called stumps. |
Archery | The art or sport of shooting arrows with a bow |
Boxing | A sport in which two people fight each other with their hands, while wearing very large thick gloves (called boxing gloves) |
Volleyball | A game in which two teams of six players use their hands to hit a large ball backwards and forwards over a high net while trying not to let the ball touch the ground on their own side |
Skateboarding | The sport or activity of riding on a skateboard |
Golf | A game played over a large area of ground using specially shaped sticks to hit a small hard ball (a golf ball) into a series of 9 or 18 holes, using as few strokes as possible |
Javelin | A light spear (a long stick with a pointed end) which is thrown in a sporting event |
Tennis | A game in which two or four players use rackets to hit a ball backwards and forwards across a net on a specially marked court |

Skiing | The sport or activity of moving over snow on skis |

High jump | A sporting event in which people try to jump over a high bar that is gradually raised higher and higher |
Table tennis | A game played like tennis with bats and a small plastic ball on a table with a net across it |
Karate | A Japanese system of fighting in which you use your hands and feet as weapons |
Badminton | A game like tennis played by two or four people, usually indoors. Players hit a small light kind of ball, originally with feathers around it (a shuttlecock) across a high net using a racket. |
Surfing | The sport of riding on waves while standing on a narrow board called a surfboard |
Darts | A small pointed object, sometimes with feathers to help it fly, that is shot as a weapon or thrown in the game of darts |
Rugby | A game played by two teams of 13 or 15 players, using an oval ball which may be kicked or carried. Teams try to put the ball over the other team’s line. |
Long jump | A sporting event in which people try to jump as far forward as possible after running up to a line |
