| prophage | an inactive bacteriophage, which is inserted into the host's chromosome |

| temperate phage | bacteriophage that does not immediately kill it's host cell |
| uncoating | the removal of the viral capsid within a host cell |
| virion | a virus outside of a cell |
| viroid | infectious piece of RNA |
