Leukoplakia

| Leukoplakia | a clinical description that describes a flat, white, rough or smooth lesion that cannot be wiped off or determined as any other disease. |
| Causes of Leukoplakia | protective response to local irritation (such as rubbing), tobacco use, alcohol abuse, sun exposure |
| Demographics of Leukoplakia | Most common oral lesion seen usually in older adults (over 40). 70% of cases are in males. |
| Leukoplakia | Most commonly found on the lop vermillion, buccal mucosa, and gingiva. |
| Microscopic features of Leukoplakia | Biopsy of the lesion may display hyperkeratosis, various levels of dysplasia, and islands of malignant epithelium in carcinoma. |
| Differential Diagnosis for Leukoplakia | Hyperkeratosis, Dysplasia, Squamous Cell Carcinoma |
| Treatment for Leukoplakia | Remove cause and follow up frequently. Biopsy lesion to rule out malignancy. |
