Human body vocab

word definition
blood A system of fluids and cells that carries nutrients and oxygen to cells in the body.
digestive system The major organ system that breaks down food into nutrients that the body's cells can use.
artery A blood vessel that carries blood AWAY from the heart.
circulatory system Organs that transport oxygen, nutrients, water and wastes.
respiratory system Organs that work together to take air into the body and push it back out.
vein A blood vessel that carries blood TO the heart.
muscular system A body system made of muscle that makes the body parts move.
skeletal system A body system that gives the body its shape, protects the organs inside the body, and works with muscles to move the body.
esophagus A muscular tube that pushes food toward the stomach.
large intestine The organ where water and minerals from food are removed and absorbed into the blood.
small intestine The long coil organ where most digestion takes place.
stomach A muscular organ that mixes and stores food and continues the process of digestion.
heart A muscular pump that pushes the blood through the blood vessels.
