digestion The process where the body breaks down food into smaller pieces
absorption The process where nutrients are taken up into the blood
saliva The fluid released in the mouth; the first part of chemical digestion
enzyme A chemical that speeds up chemical reactions in the body
epiglottis Flap of tissue that seals off the windpipe and prevents food from entering
esophagus A muscular tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
mucus A thick slippery substance produced by the body; found in the esophagus and stomach
peristalsis Involuntary waves of muscle contraction that keep the food moving in one direction through the digestive system
stomach A J-shaped muscular pouch located in the abdomen; mechanical and chemical digestion happen here
small intestine The part of the digestive system where most chemical digestion happens; absorption begins; 3 times your height
liver Organ that produces bile
bile A substance that breaks up fat; made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder
gallbladder An organ that stores bile
pancreas Organ that produces enzymes which flow into the small intestines that help break down starches, proteins and fats
villi Tiny inger-shaped structures that cover the inner surface of the small intestines and provide a large surface area for absorption to occur
large intestine Last section of the digestive system where water is absorbed and remaining material is eliminated from the body
rectum The end of the large intestine where waste material is compressed into a solid before being eliminated
anus A muscular opening at the end of the rectum through which waste material is eliminated from the body
