QuestionAnswer
Opening lead against NT Longest/strongest suit - unless partner has bid (lead on their behalf) - not lead their suits 1. Top of touching honours 2. Second highest from poor suit (headed by T or lower) 3. Top of interior sequence 4. Low from good suit (headed by J or better)
Rule of 20 Opening hand if HCP plus length in two longest suits equals 20 or more
Rule of 14 Response to partner’s opening bid: change of suit at 2 level requires HCP plus length of suit equals 14 or more
Which suit to open with unbalanced hand? Longest suit; higher ranking suit if equal length except H with 4H/4S; suit below singleton if 4-4-4-1 (?? Singleton C goes to H; but singleton D goes to C or H??)
Openers unbalanced rebid (part 1) 1. With support from partner => LTC and/or point count (25 HCP for 4 majors; 28 HCP for 5 minors) 2. With support for partner => LTC and/or point count (14-15 raise one; 16-18 jump one; 19 game) 3. With 4441 and singleton in partner’s suit: 1N
Openers unbalanced rebid (part 2) 4. Bid 2nd 4+ card suit (if exists) at lowest level 5. Rebid 6+ card suit: 11-15 lowest; 16-18 jump; 19 game (3NT with 6C/6D)
Openers balanced rebid (15-19 HCP) 15-16 1N; 17-18 2N; 19 3N
Stayman
2/3C response to 1/2N (or one level up opponent’s suit in case of intervention) 1. 11+ points (4+ over 2N): unbalanced, 4H or 4S 2. 0-10 points: 5/4 in H/S
Responding to Stayman 1. 2D => less than 4 H and S 2. 2H => 4+H (possibly 4S as well) 3. 2S => 4+S (and less than 4H)
Phoney Stayman Weakness takeout over 1N - revers into 3C to cancel Stayman (but could have used 2S Transfer just as well?)
Transfers Response to 1N; requires 5+ card suit 2C Stayman; 2D->2H;2H->2S;2S->3C [which can be corrected to 3D if required] Show balanced hand thereafter (e.g. 1N - 2H - 2S - 2N => 11-12 points; balanced; 5S) ... or second suit (e.g. 1N - 2D - 2H - 3C)
2NT Opening and Responding Balanced 20-22 points 1. 0-4 point -> pass 2. 4H/S, unbalanced -> 3C (Stayman) 3. 5H/S -> 3H/S 4. 6H/S -> 4H/S
1NT Overcall 1. Balanced 2. 16-18 (think extra ace) 3. Stopper in opponent’s suit
Overcalling Suit 1. At 1 level: 6-16 points; 5+ card suit; sliding scale: strength of suit vs point count 2. At 2 level: rule of 20; 6+ card suit 3. Balanced hands: basically don’t (balanced hands are for defending)
Take-out Double 1. Shortage in opponent’s suit(s) (2 or less cards/3 or less if 2 suits have been bid) 2. Support in all unbid suits (3 or more cards/4 or more if 2 suits have been bid) 3. 12+ points
Take-out Double Response 1. Must respond unless opponents bid again 2. Jump with 10+ points
1NT Double 1. For penalty 2. 15+ points 3. Only respond (pull) with less then 5 points and 5+ decent card suit
Opening lead against suit 1. Do not lead opponent’s suits 2. Singleton 3. Suit bid by partner
Jacoby 2NT Response to 1 major; 13/15+ points; support suit (also LTC 7-?) 1. LTC 9+ -> 2M; LTC 8 -> 3M; 7-10 points, preemptive -> 4M; singleton/void, <12 points -> 4C/D/M* 2. 15-16 points, balanced, no support -> 3NT
Jacoby 2NT Responses 1. Singleton/void -> 3 C/D/M* 2. Secondary 4/5 card trick winning suit -> 4 C/D/M* (pref) 3. Intermediate 15-16 points, no singleton/void -> 3NT 4. Strong hand 17+ points, no singleton/void -> 3H 5. Other minimum hands (don’t show singleton) -> 4H
Michael’s Cue Bid Overcall by bidding opponent’s suit indicating 5+ in unbid major (or both majors) and 5+ in unspecified minor
Unassuming Cue Bid Response to partner’s Overcall with support and 10+ points: bid opponent’s suit one level up
4th Suit Forcing Biding of 4th suit is not natural, but agree last suit bid and asks for further details
Inverted Minors Responding to 1 minor: Fit - 6-9 points 3 of the minor, else 2 of the minor
Unusual 2NT Overcall Offers 2 lowest unbid suits (5+ in length) Compare to Michael’s Cue Bid and Take Out Double (12+ points)
Weak Two 6+ cards and less than opening points ... ... and not too many high card points outside the primary suit Best to worst position for bidding: 3-1-2-4
Weak Two (Majors) - Enquiry With fit and 15+ points bit 2NT (cf. Jacoby 2NT) Min hand (3-7 points) -> 3M; max hand (8-10 points) -> 3x for shortage; max hand, no short -> 3N Looking for shortage opposite weak, long suit
Weak Two (Majors) - Change of Suit Good 6+ card suit in good (but not great - 12-16 HCP) hand
Weak Two (D) - Enquiry
