Aorta
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Splenic Artery (SPA) | supplies the spleen, pancreas, and left side of the greater curvature of the stomach as it courses horizontally to the left with a slight inferior to superior angulation |
Renin | is released from the kidney in the event of bleeding. |
Renal Arteries | branch from the lateral aspect of the aorta. Both arteries supply the kidneys. The right renal artery has a longer course than the left renal artery because the aorta sits on the left of the spine, forcing RRA a greater distance to reach the kidney |
Inferior Mesentric Artery (IMA) | Is the next major artery that branches from the aorta and persues an anteroinferior course dividing into several other smaller arteries supplying the transverse colon, decending colon, and rectum |
Common Hepatic Artery (CHA) | persues a horizontal course to the right and branches into the gastroduodenal artery (GDA) and proper hepatic artery (PHA) |
Celiac Artery | also known as celiac trunk and celiac axis. Branches anteriorly from the aorta. Has left gastric artery, splenic artery, common hepatic artery |
Aorta | is a retroperitoneal structure coursing in a superior to inferior direction along the left side of the spine |
Angiotensin 2 | a hormone released in the event of bleeding to initiate vasoconstriction and help maintain blood pressure |
Common Iliac Arteries | abdominal aorta division into right and left common iliac arteries. supply the pelvis and lower extremities |
Suprarenal Arteries | also termed the adrenal arteries. originate bilaterally from the lateral aspect of the aorta and course horizontally to the adrenal glands. These arteries commonly originate between the level of CA and the superior mesenteric artery |
Gonadal Arteries | originate from the anterior aspect of the aorta and course inferiorly to their respective organs |
Proper Hepatic Artery (PHA) | course right lateral and superiorly, supplying the liver via the right, middle and left hepatic arteries. The cystic artery feeds the gallbladder after it branches from the right hepatic artery |
Superior Mesentric Artery (SMA) | branches from the anterior aspect of the aorta within centimeters of the CA. the SMA continues as anterior-inferior course and divides into several arteries that supply the largest portion of the small intestines and the ascending colon & transverse colon |
Gastroduodenal Artery (GDA) | courses inferiorly, supplying the right side of the greater curvature of the stomach via the right gastroepiploic artery and the pancreatic duodenal area via the superior anterior and superior posterior pancreatic duodenal arteries |
Left Gastric Artery (LGA) | courses superiorly and to the left. It doubles back to supply the left side of the lesser curvature of the stomach and eventually anastomoses with the right gastric artery |
