Laboratory Vocabulary

| Beaker | A glass container that has a wide mouth and holds solids and liquids |
| Graduated Cylinder | A tall, cylindrical container used for measuring the volume of liquids |
| Meniscus | Bottom of the curve a liquid forms in a container |
| Test Tube | A cylindrical container that holds a small quantity of a solid or liquid |
| Erlenmeyer Flask | A cone-shaped container with a narrow neck and a broad flat bottom |
| Buret | A long, thin cylinder which is marked to 0.1 of a milliliter |
| Petri Dish | A shallow dish with a loose-fitting cover |
| Holding Device | To hold equipment, you'll need ring stands, iron rings, and clamps |
| Balance | A scientific instrument that determines the mass of materials |
| Calibrate | To check, adjust, or standardize the marks on a measuring instrument |
| Insoluble | Incapable of dissolving |
| Accuracy | How close a single measurement comes to the actual or the value of the quantity measured |
| Precision | How close several measurements are close to the same value |
| Metric System | A common language used for measurement |
| Decimal System | Numbers are expressed in units of ten |
