menstruation | monthly discharge of the endometrium from the uterus through the vagina when fertilization does not occur |
conception | fertilization of a mature egg by a male sperm |
fallopian tubes | narrow tubes that lie close to the ovaries and connect to the uterus |
zygote | the new cell that forms when the nuclei of the sperm and egg merge into one nucleus |
chromosome | threadlike structure that contains hereditary information |
gene | basic unit of heredity |
contraception | the deliberate prevention of pregnancy, or birth control |
genetic counseling | scientific information and advice about heredity |
congenital disorders | disorders that people are born with that result from heredity |
infertility | inability to conceive despite having intercourse regularly for at least one year |
artificial insemination | procedure to promote conception in which a doctor places sperm-containing semen directly in the upper part of a woman's vagina or uterus |
in vitro fertilzation | procedure to promote conception that involves removing eggs from a woman's ovaries, fertilizing them with a man's sperm in a glass dish, and then placing the fertilized eggs in the woman's uterus |
closed adoption | no contact between the birthparents and the adoptive family |
open adoption | some degree of contact between birthparents and adoptive parents |
