Define Lingual Thyroid A form of ectopic thyroid resulting from the lack of normal downward migration of the thyroid gland.
Other names for Lingual Thyroid Other names for Lingual Thyroid include: Ectopic Thyroid, Thyroid Dysgenesis, and Accessory Thyroid Gland.
Clinical features of Lingual Thyroid Ectopic thyroid tissue may be found between the foramen cecum and epiglottis. Small asymptomatic remnants of thyroid tissue discovered on posterior dorsal tongue. Nodular red mass on posterior tongue, varies in size, ranging from a few mm to 3-4 cm
Microscopic features of Lingual Thyroid Microscopic features include: Non-encapsulated collection of embryonic or mature thyroid follicles.
Gender, Age, Location, and Prevalence of Lingual Thyroid 10% of both men and women 4-7x more frequent in females
Treatment for Lingual Thyroid Treatment modalities of Lingual thyroid involve no treatment for asymptomatic patients. Suppressive therapy with thyroid hormone surgical excision with supplementation is for severe patients.
Prognosis for Lingual Thyroid The prognosis for Lingual Thyroid is good with proper treatment.
