Cardiovascular | Organs: heart, blood vessels Function: transports blood to carry oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients and waste |
Digestive | Organs: mouth, esophagus, liver, stomach, intestines, rectum, anus. Function: breaks down food mechanically/chemically, absorbs food into blood to distribute to cells |
Skeletal | Organs: bones, joints Functions: protects/supports body organs, blood cells form inside of hollow bones, bones store minerals, bones move by using skeletal muscles |
Respiratory | Organs: nose, trachea, lungs Function: delivers oxygen to blood, removes carbon dioxide from blood, regulates acid/base balance of blood |
Reproductive Male | Organs: testes, prostate gland, deferens duct, penis Function: creates sperm in testes, deliver sperm in ducts, makes/release testosterone |
Reproductive Female | Organs: ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, vagina, mammary glands Function: creates egg in ovary, delivers egg to uterus, make/release estrogen/progesterone, site for fetal development |
Muscular | Organs: skeletal muscles Function: movement/posture, facial expression, heat production |
Integumentary | Organs: hair, skin, nails Function: covers body, protects deeper tissues, makes vitamin D, sensory nerves for feeling, sweat glands, oil/other glands |
Endocrine | Organs: glands (pineal, pituitary, thyroid, adrenal), thymus, pancreas, ovary, testes Function: glands release hormones that regulate growth, reproduction, food use for body cells |
Lymphatic/Immune | Organs: spleen, bone marrow, lymphatic vessels/nodes Function: picks up fluid leaked by blood vessels, cleans leaked blood, returns to blood vessels, houses white blood cells for immune response |
Urinary | Organs: kidneys, ureters, bladder, urethra Function: regulates water/salts in blood, regulates acid/base balance of blood, eliminates nitrogen from blood |
Nervous | Organs: brain, nerves, spinal cord Function: fast acting control system, receives internal/external info changes, activates muscles/glands in response to change |
