Vietnamese Vowels

The English equivalent of Vietnamese Vowel Sounds

VowelEnglish equivalent sounds
a /aː/ The "a" in cat
ă /a/ like 'a' in "father", except said very quickly: chăn (ah)
â /ə/ like 'u' in "hut", except shorter: sân
e /ɛ/ like 'eah' in "yeah": che
ê /e/ like the Canadian English "eh": cà phê
i or y /i/ The "e's" in bee (the letter E sound)
o /ɔ/ The "aw" in saw (ah, not hard A)
ô /o/ The "o" in spoke
ơ /ə:/ like â, except longer: bơ
u /u/ The "oo" in boo
ư /ɨ/ like 'oo' in "book", with a hint of the 'i' in "lick": thư
