Unit 6.2 Biology Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Cellular Respiration process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen
Anaerobic respiration Respiration that does not require oxygen
Aerobic respiration Respiration that requires oxygen
Mitochondria Powerhouse of the cell, organelle that is the site of ATP (energy) production
Alcoholic fermentation The anaerobic process by which yeasts and other microorganisms break down sugars to form carbon dioxide and ethanol.
Lactic acid fermentation This happens when muscle cells use up oxygen faster than it can be replaced.
