Natural Selection and Adaptations

Charles Darwin He came up with the Theory of Evolution and Natural Selection
Natural Selection Process that occurs when a population changes in response to their environment.
Evolution A change in heritable traits over successive generations.
Survival of the Fittest A species ability to survive and produce offspring.
Adaptation A change that allows a species to be better suited to its environment.
What adaptations did Darwin study in finches? What did he find out about the adaptations? Size and shape of beaks. He found that finches had specialized beaks based on food and habitat.
Why is the color of the rock pocket mouse important for its survival? It allowed them to camouflage with its habitat.
What causes some of the light-colored mice to be dark-colored? A random mutation.
What caused the dark-colored peppered moths to have a greater population than light-colored ones? They were able to camouflage with the dark trees and were able to survive.
What type of beak is better for cracking hard seeds? A strong, thick beak.
What type of beak is better for eating meat? A tearing beak.
Over time, what caused the population of light-colored peppered moths to increase in population? The factories were cleaner and the trees were not as dark.
What type of birds use talons, sharp claws, to catch their prey? Eagles, hawks, and owls.
What type of birds use their beaks for sipping? Hummingbirds.
What type of birds use their beaks for drilling? Woodpeckers.
