A list of the meanings of certain terms which relate to the digestive process.

| Ingestion | The physical intake of food into the body |
| Mechanical Digestion | The physical breaking apart of food into smaller parts to increase surface area |
| Chemical Digestion | The breaking apart of chemical bonds in food to prepare it for absorption |
| Emulsification | The process of polar molecules surrounding a non-polar fat to make it water-soluble |
| Elimination | Pooping |
| Absorption | The process of the body pulling in the chemicals present after chemical digestion |
| Peristalsis | The 'wave' movement of smooth muscle, which pushes food through the digestive tract |
| Bolus | The chewed, but not digested, food present after the mouth does its bidness |
| Chyme | Half-digested food expelled from the stomach into the duodenum |
| Endocrine gland | A gland that secretes its products (hormones) directly into the bloodstream. Examples include the pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, testis, thyroid, and adrenal gland |
| Exocrine gland | A gland that secretes its products into a duct. Examples include sweat glands, salivary glands, mammary glands, stomach, liver, and pancreas |
| Dietary fiber (roughage) | The indigestible portion of plant foods that pushes food through the digestive system, absorbing water and easing defecation. |
