Membrane Transport
Mechanisms
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Tonicity | Concentration of solute in a solution |
Isotonic | Two solutions having the same osmotic pressure - no water movement in membrane |
Hypotonic | Water movement into cells (cells swells up) |
Hypertonic | Water movement out of the cell (cell shrinks) |
Osmosis | Diffusion of water molecules across membrane |
Simple diffusion | Occurs through the lipid bilayer with the substance being lipid soluble |
Facilitated diffusion | Passive process using transport proteins |
Primary active transport | Passive process using transport energy stored in ATP = ATP--> ADP + P + energy |
Secondary active transport | Process using potential energy transport stored in a concentration gradient |
Vesicular transport | Molecules move in membrane bound vesicles (ATP Required) |
