Membrane Transport
Mechanisms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Tonicity | Concentration of solute in a solution |
| Isotonic | Two solutions having the same osmotic pressure - no water movement in membrane |
| Hypotonic | Water movement into cells (cells swells up) |
| Hypertonic | Water movement out of the cell (cell shrinks) |
| Osmosis | Diffusion of water molecules across membrane |
| Simple diffusion | Occurs through the lipid bilayer with the substance being lipid soluble |
| Facilitated diffusion | Passive process using transport proteins |
| Primary active transport | Passive process using transport energy stored in ATP = ATP--> ADP + P + energy |
| Secondary active transport | Process using potential energy transport stored in a concentration gradient |
| Vesicular transport | Molecules move in membrane bound vesicles (ATP Required) |
