Mechanisms

Tonicity Concentration of solute in a solution
Isotonic Two solutions having the same osmotic pressure - no water movement in membrane
Hypotonic Water movement into cells (cells swells up)
Hypertonic Water movement out of the cell (cell shrinks)
Osmosis Diffusion of water molecules across membrane
Simple diffusion Occurs through the lipid bilayer with the substance being lipid soluble
Facilitated diffusion Passive process using transport proteins
Primary active transport Passive process using transport energy stored in ATP = ATP--> ADP + P + energy
Secondary active transport Process using potential energy transport stored in a concentration gradient
Vesicular transport Molecules move in membrane bound vesicles (ATP Required)
