Mendelian Genetics

Vocab for genetics

TermDefinition
Homozygous A genotype with two of the same alleles
Heterozygous A genotype with two different alleles
Dominant An allele that always is expressed (shown) if it is inherited. Use an upper-case letter
Recessive An allele that is only expressed when no dominant allele is inherited. Use a lower-case letter!
Genotype The genetic makeup, or allele combinations, an organisms has.
Phenotype the physical appearance, or traits, an organism has.
Purebred Another term for homozygous. The result of many generations of breeding only homozygous organisms together.
Hybrid Another term for heterozygous. A mix of two varieties of a species.
Allele A version, or form of a gene. Like a "flavor."
Punnett Square A tool for predicting the probability of genotypes and phenotypes of offspring.
