Ecology

TermDefinition
Ecology The study of the interactions of organisms with one another and their environment
Biotic Describes living factors of the environment
Abiotic Describes non-living factors of the environment- including rocks, light, water,temperature,etc
Predation The action of an animal preying/attacking other animals
Competition When two or more individuals try to use the sam resources to survive.
Symbiosis A close, long term association between 2 or more species
Mutualism A relationship in which both organisms benefit.
Parasitism A relationship where one organism benefits and the other is harmed
Commensalism Relationship where one organism benefits and the other is unaffected
Ecosystem Contists of organisms and their abiotic environment
Autotroph Organisms that get energy from the sun and can make their own food
Heterotroph Organisms that eat others to survive
Decomposer Organisms that break down dead organisms to survive
Population A group of organisms of the same species that live and interact with each other
Communities All the populations(species)that live together
Biomes A large area of species that characterized by its climate
Carnivore Organisms that only eat animals
Energy Primard A diagram that shows an ecosystems loss of energy.
