Terms and Definitions of Behavior

QuestionAnswer
What is the response to chemicals? Chemotaxis
What is the response to light? Phototaxis
What is taxis? An organism’s movement toward or away from stimulus?
A flatworm moves away from a chemical (acid) in water, what type of taxis is this? Negative Chemotaxis
A moth flies around at light at night, what type of taxis is this? Positive Phototaxis
What is behavior? Anything an organism does in response to a stimulus
What is a plant’s response to a stimulus? Tropism
What is a reflex? A simple automatic response
What is instinct? A complex pattern of behavior, such as a bird building a nest or a frog catching insects to eat.
How is the “fight or flight” response utilized? It mobilizes the body for greater activity
What is dominance hierarchy? The social ranking amongst organisms
What is unlearned behavior called? Innate Behavior
What is conditioning? Learning by association (Pavlov’s dogs)
What is the pecking order? Social ranking in chickens.
