Module 3 Lesson 1 Vocabulary

TermDefinition
prokaryotes cells that do not contain a nucleus or membrane bound organelles
eukaryotes cells that contain a nucleus and membrane bound organelles.
chloroplast organelle where photosynthesis takes place in a plant. Found only in plant cells.
ribosomes organelle where protein synthesis takes place in a cell. Called the Protein Factory
mitochondria organelle where respiration takes place in a eukaryotic cell. Known as the "powerhouse" of the cell.
cell wall Outer layer of a plant cell. Found only in plant cells.
vacuoles Storage area for cells. Larger in plants.
nucleus controls the cell's activities
