Coronavirus-Viral agent Enveloped Helical, Large +ssRNA genome. Serious veterinary pathogen; dogs, cats, cattle, pigs, horses, chickens, rats, mice, birds and other mammals.
Coronavirus cause? 10-20% of common colds.
Coronavirus Symptoms replication confined to upper respiratory tract. Usually mild human pathogen, but causes SARS.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) History Nov.-2002: Outbreak in Guangdong China. Chinese Gov. remained silent for months, then claimed it was caused by "chalmydia" bacteria. Feb-2003:more than 300 cases of atypical pneumonia in Guangdong.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) History (Cont.) A doctor from Guanzhou visited HK & stayed @ the metropole hotel. Infected 12 guest, doc dies. Other metropole guests went to Singapore, Vietnam & canada became indexpatients for new outbreaks.8,422 cases, 916 deaths.
Who is Dr. Urbani Director of Infectious disease for the Western Pacific Region of the WHO.
What did Dr. Urbani do for (SARS) He was the first to report (SARS). A month after seeing his first case and 18 days after coming down with the symptoms himself, he died and the age of 46 on March 29th.
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Symptoms Usually appear 2-10 days after infection. Fever 100.4 f. Flu-like: myalgia, lethargy, GI symptoms, cough, and sore throat. 10-20% patients have to be put on ventilator. Mortality rate 20%
Severe Acute Respiratory (SARS) Treatment Mostly supportive with anit-pyretics, 02 ventilator. Steriods. Ribavirin (may or may not help), and interferon.
What were the 4 mini-outbreaks since the summer of 2003? 3 lab accidents: 9/03 Singapore; affected lab workers. 10/03; Taiwan, affected lab workers. 4/04 China's leading SARS lab, spread beyond lab-over 600 quarantined. One natural outbreak: 12/03-1/04 Guangdong, Province, sickened 4.
