RNA Viruses-Influenza Virus

Influenza Virus characteristics Enveloped, 8RNA segments, N & N Spikes. Virus attaches to and infects cell in trachea- results in localized cell damamge, No Viremia. Antigenic drift and shift; virus-changes & immune system doesn't recognize it.
Influenza Virus Symptoms chills, fever, headaches, muscular aches. Kills over 30K Americans each year.
Influenza Virus Treatment Multivalent or trivalent (3-strains) vaccines created yearly. Includes 2 A-strains & 1 B-strain. Grown in embryonated chicken eggs, purified HA. Takes about 6 months to produce. Oct. to mid-Nov. best time for vaccine.
In 2005-2006 Influenza vaccine included A/California/7/2004(H3N2)-like antigens. A/New Caledonia/20/99(H1N1)-like antigens. B/Shanghai/361/2002-like antigens
