Passive Transport
Passive transport and the Cell Membrane Structure
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Phospholipid | Type of lipid that makes up the structure of the cell membrane |
| Hydrophobic | Water fearing fatty acid tails |
| Hydrophilic | Water loving phosphate heads |
| Fluid Mosaic Model | Description of the cell membrane because it acts like a fluid and is very flexible |
| Properties of Passive Transport | (1) requires no energy (2) moves from high to low concentration gradient |
| Concentration Gradient | An unequal build up of molecules on one side of the cell membrane |
| Diffusion | Movement of particles from high to low concentration; no energy is required (EX: oxygen, water, carbon dioxide) |
| Osmosis | Movement of water from high to low concentration; no energy is required |
| Facilitated Diffusion | Movement of very large particles from high to low concentration; no energy is required and the particles move through a protein channel (EX: glucose) |
| Examples of substances that move using diffusion | Oxygen and Carbon dioxide, odor particles |
| Examples of substances that move using facilitated diffusion | Glucose |
| Examples of substances that move using osmosis | Water |
