Echo I Terms
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| myxomatous | a valvular heart disease characterized by the displacement of an abnormally thickened mitral valve leaflet into the left atrium during systole; AKA floppy MV syndrome |
| EROA | effective regurgitant orifice area |
| Coanda Effect | the tendency of a fluid jet to stay attached to a convex surface |
| eccentric | situated or occurring or proceeding away from a center |
| vena contracta | the point in a fluid stream where the diameter of the stream is the least, and fluid velocity is at its maximum |
| PISA | proximal isovelocity surface area; used to estimate the area of an orifice through which blood flows |
| fibrous | typical connective tissue in which white inelastic fibers predominate as distinguished from elastic tissue |
| commissure | a point or line of union or junction especially between two anatomical parts (such as adjacent heart valves) |
| iatrogenic | induced inadvertently by a physician or surgeon or by medical treatment or diagnostic procedures |
| hemoptysis | spitting up blood or blood-tinged sputum from the respiratory tract; occurs when tiny blood vessels that line the lung airways are broken |
| pressure half time | the time interval in milliseconds between the maximum mitral gradient in early diastole and the time point where the gradient is half the maximum initial value |
| deceleration time | time taken from the maximum E point to baseline |
| percutaneous balloon valvuloplasty | one or more large balloons are inserted percutaneously and then inflated across a stenotic valve to decrease the degree of obstruction |
| ascites | abnormal accumulation of fluid within the abdomen |
| EPSS | E-point septal separation; by measuring the distance between the anterior mitral valve and interventricular septum we can roughly assess the heart’s ejection fraction |
| planimetry | the measurement of surface areas and perimeters by tracing the boundaries |
| aneurysm | a localized widening (dilatation) of an artery, a vein, or the heart |
| tethering | a binding or attachment |
| vegetation | an abnormal growth named for its similarity to natural vegetation; often associated with endocarditis |
| Rouleau Effect | stacks or aggregations of red blood cells resembling rolls of coins |
| zona coapta | a zone of coaptation; where valve leaflet tips overlap or come together |
