Lipids
Biomolecules Unit 1
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Hydrophobic | Water fearing EX: fatty acid tails |
| Hydrophilic | Water loving EX: phosphate heads |
| Main Functions of Lipids (3) | (1) Long term energy storage (2) Compose/make up the cell membrane (3) Insulation EX: blubber in whales to keep them warm in cold waters (4) Steroid hormones for secondary sex characteristics |
| Monomer of a Lipid | Glycerol and 3 Fatty Acids |
| Phospholipid | Specific lipid that makes the cell membrane |
| Properties of Saturated Fats | Come from animal products, are a solid at room temperature, unhealthy (bad) fats EX: bacon |
| Properties of Unsaturated Fats | Come from plant products, are a liquid at room temperature, healthy (good) fats EX: olive oil |
| Grease Spot Test (brown paper bag) | Test used to identify the presence of lipids in foods |
| Structure of Saturated Fats | Holds the maximum number of hydrogen atoms; composed of all single bonds between carbon and hydrogen atoms |
| Structure of Unsaturated Fats | Does not hold the maximum number of hydrogen atoms; a double bond is present between carbon and oxygen preventing the ability to bind to more hydrogen atoms |
