Carbohydrates
Biomolecules Unit 1
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Monomer of a Carbohydrate | Monosaccharide |
| Starch | Short term energy molecule used by plants |
| Glycogen | Short term energy molecule used by animals; stored in the liver and muscles |
| Cellulose | Molecule used to make up the cell wall structure in plants |
| Chitin | Molecule used to make up the exoskeleton (external/outside skeleton) in animals like cockroaches |
| Two main Functions of Carbohydrates | (1) Short term energy (2) Used to make up the Structure of plants and some animals |
| Benedict's Test | Test used to identify the presence of simple sugars, like glucose |
| Iodine Test | Test used to identify the presence of complex sugars, like starch |
| Polymer of a Carbohydrate | Polysaccharide |
| Examples of Monosaccharides | Glucose |
| Examples of Polysaccharides | Starch, Glycogen, Cellulose, Chitin |
| Elements that compose (make up) a Carbohydrate | C, H, O (Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen |
| Simple Carbohydrate | A simple sugar that provides short term energy storage; also known as a monosaccharide |
| Complex Carbohydrate | A complex sugar consisting of many simple sugars that are joined together in long chains; also known as a polysaccharide |
