Monomer of a Carbohydrate Monosaccharide
Starch Short term energy molecule used by plants
Glycogen Short term energy molecule used by animals; stored in the liver and muscles
Cellulose Molecule used to make up the cell wall structure in plants
Chitin Molecule used to make up the exoskeleton (external/outside skeleton) in animals like cockroaches
Two main Functions of Carbohydrates (1) Short term energy (2) Used to make up the Structure of plants and some animals
Benedict's Test Test used to identify the presence of simple sugars, like glucose
Iodine Test Test used to identify the presence of complex sugars, like starch
Polymer of a Carbohydrate Polysaccharide
Examples of Monosaccharides Glucose
Examples of Polysaccharides Starch, Glycogen, Cellulose, Chitin
Elements that compose (make up) a Carbohydrate C, H, O (Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen
Simple Carbohydrate A simple sugar that provides short term energy storage; also known as a monosaccharide
Complex Carbohydrate A complex sugar consisting of many simple sugars that are joined together in long chains; also known as a polysaccharide
