Biology 1a
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Isotonic | When the concentration of ionic solution is equal, water will not move, it is in equilibrium |
| Hypertonic | Solution with higher solute concentration, water will flow into this solution |
| Hypotonic | Solution with a lower solute concentration, water will flow from this solution to the hypertonic one |
| Semi-permeable membrane | A membrane that allows certain things to penetrate it but not others |
| Phospholipid | Hydrophilic head and hydrophobic tails, make up the cell membrane |
| Hydrophilic | mixes with water, polar |
| Hydrophobic | Does NOT mix with water, non-polar |
| Fluid-mosaic model | The description of the cell membrane's fluid mobility |
| Endocytosis | ENDO=INcell takes in materials from the outside by engulfing and fusing them with its plasma membrane. |
| Exocytosis | EXO=OUTCell releases materials to the outside by discharging them as vesicles passing through the cell membrane |
| Receptor Protein | Protein on surface of cell that binds substrates |
| Transport Protein | Protein that helps to transport things in and out of the cell |
| Marker Protein | Protein that allows things to recognize the cell, like a name tag |
| Simple Diffusion | When substances go right through the cell membrane with no use of energy, ex: CO2, O2 |
| Facilitated Diffusion | When things go through a transport protein without using Energy, substances move from higher concentrations to lower concentrations |
| Osmosis | Simple diffusion BUT only for water. Water moves in order to equalize ionic solutions |
| Active transport | Uses ATP to transport things in and out of the cell, subtances to go from area of low concentration to areas of high concentration |
| What is homeostasis? | The ability to maintain balance |
