Dowd's Plant Kingdom Vocabulary

VocabularyDescription
cellulose compound in cell walls of plants that provides structure and support
cuticle a waxy layer on leaves of many plants to prevent water loss
nonvascular plant a plant that absorbs water and other substances through its cell walls instead of through tubelike structures
stomata tiny openings in leaves through which gases enter and exit
guard cells cells that surround stomata and control their opening and closing
rhizoid threadlike structure that anchor nonvascular plants to the ground
xylem vascular tissue that transports water and minerals throughout a plant
phloem vascular tissue that transports food (sugar) throughout the plant
vascular plant a plant with tubelike structures that move water and other substances through the plant
gymnosperm vascular plants that do not flower, usually have needle like leaves and produce unprotected seeds (not in fruit)
angiosperm flowering vascular plant that produces seeds in fruits
monocot angiosperm with one seed part, flower parts in three, and vascular tissue scattered
dicot angiosperm with two seed halves, flower parts in four or five, and vascular tissue in rings
