key vocabulary for Genetics Unit
| Term | Definition |

| trait | The different forms of a characteristic (dimples: present or absent). |
| alleles | The letters that represent the different forms of a gene (dimples D = present or d =absent). |
| heterozygous/ hybrid | When two alleles (letters) are different for one trait (ex. Dd). |
| chromosomes | This is what contains your genes. |
| phenotype | The physical appearance of a trait (ex. hair color). |
| gene | The factor that controls the trait you exhibit or show. |
| homozygous/purebred | When two alleles (letters) are the same(ex. DD). |
| recessive | The trait that hides in the background (lowercase letter) and can only be expressed in homozygous form. |
| dominant | The trait that overshadows and is expressed (capital letter). |
| heredity | The passing of physical characteristics from parents to offspring. |
| genotype | The combination of alleles or letters (ex. DD, Dd, dd). |
| genetics | The scientific study of heredity. |
