Genetics Vocabulary

key vocabulary for Genetics Unit

TermDefinition
trait The different forms of a characteristic (dimples: present or absent).
alleles The letters that represent the different forms of a gene (dimples D = present or d =absent).
heterozygous/ hybrid When two alleles (letters) are different for one trait (ex. Dd).
chromosomes This is what contains your genes.
phenotype The physical appearance of a trait (ex. hair color).
gene The factor that controls the trait you exhibit or show.
homozygous/purebred When two alleles (letters) are the same(ex. DD).
recessive The trait that hides in the background (lowercase letter) and can only be expressed in homozygous form.
dominant The trait that overshadows and is expressed (capital letter).
heredity The passing of physical characteristics from parents to offspring.
genotype The combination of alleles or letters (ex. DD, Dd, dd).
genetics The scientific study of heredity.
