Cell Organelles
6th Grade Life Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Eukaryotic cells | All plants and animals are classified as having Eukaryotic cells. The cells have membrane-bound organelles which includes a nucleus. Eukaryotic cell are much more advanced. |
| Cytoskeleton | A network of protein filaments that gives the shape and support to cell. |
| DNA | Short for Deoxyribonucleic acid. DNA is the genetic material that contains the instructions for what the cell is supposed to do. |
| Mitochondria | The organelle used in cellular respiration that breaks down food so the cell can have energy. |
| Ribosomes | The organelle makes proteins by putting together chains of amino acids using instruction encoded in the cell's DNA. |
| Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) | A system of membranes near the nucleus that assists with the production, processing, and transport of proteins and in the production of lipids. |
| Golgi Complex | The organelle that packages and distributes materials like proteins in the cell. |
| Cell wall | In plant cell this is the organelle that provides support and protection to the cell. |
| Large Central Vacuole | A fluid-filled vesicle found in cells all plants and animals, but plant cells have a very large vacuole filled with water that helps support the shape of the plant. |
| Chloroplasts | In plant cells these organelles is where photosynthesis occurs so the plant can make its' own food. |
| LLysosomes | In animal cells this organelle contains digestive enzymes which help keep the cell clean by removing waste. |
