Cellular Division
8th Grade Life Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| DNA | The genetic material in a cell's nucleus. It is the "blue print" for life. |
| Chromosomes | A threadlike structure of the genetic information (DNA) found in cells. |
| Interphase | Part of the cell cycle when the cell is not dividing. The cell is getting prepared for the upcoming cell division process. |
| Cell Cycle | The life cycle of an eukaryotic cell can be divided into 3 stages: interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis. |
| Mitosis | In eukaryotic cells this is part of the cell cycle where the nucleus divides resulting in 2 nuclei that are identical to the original nucleus. Both cells have the same DNA (clones). Needed for growth & repair. |
| Cytokinesis | Is the last step in cell division where the new cell that is formed creates its own cell membrane boundary or cell wall. |
| Meiosis | In eukaryotic cells this type of cell division is used for reproduction. The end results creates gamete cells with half DNA. |
| Gametes | Are what we call sex cells that contain half the parents DNA. |
