Cellular Respiration
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Aerobic | relating to, involving, or requiring free oxygen. |
| Anaerobic | relating to, involving, or requiring an absence of free oxygen. |
| ATP | Adenosine triphosphate, or ATP for short, is the energy currency of life. ATP is a high-energy molecule found in every cell. Its job is to store and supply the cell with needed energy. |
| Cellular respiration | is a set of metabolic reactions and processes that take place in the cells of organisms to convert biochemical energy from nutrients into adenosine triphosphate (ATP) |
| Fermentation | the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms, typically involving effervescence and the giving off of heat. |
| Glycolysis | the breakdown of glucose by enzymes, releasing energy and pyruvic acid. |
| Mitochondria | an organelle found in large numbers in most cells, in which the biochemical processes of respiration and energy production occur. It has a double membrane, the inner layer being folded inward to form layers (cristae). |
